“Forests” are considered as crucial carbon storage through photosynthesis by which Carbon dioxide (CO2) is used to produce food sources and Oxygen. Accordingly, it is evident that Reforestation, Sustainable Forest Management, and Sustainable Agroforestry Practices are necessarily beneficial for absorbing and storing CO2 which is one of the main causes of climate change.

As of B.E. 2537 (1994), “the Reforestation Campaign in Commemoration of the Royal Golden Jubilee Project to celebrate the 50th anniversary of King Bhumibol Adulyadej’s coronation” was approved by the Council of Ministers with the reforestation target of 5 million rai. The project is unlikely to be achieved if the operation is single-handedly implemented. Cooperation and collaboration among public sectors, private sectors, and educational institutions are needed to encourage the operation including preventing forest invasion and restoring degraded forest areas. Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT) held EGAT Carbon Neutrality Declaration under Triple S Strategy as follows:

  1. S-Sources Transformationis to set a share of renewable energy in generation mix. Renewable energy innovation is integrated for continual and stable electricity output. Modern technologies as well as clean and environmentally-friendly energy sources such as hydrogen will be utilized for electricity generation in the future.
  2. S-Sink Co-creation is to absorb and store carbon through the participatory 1-million-rai reforestation project. To implement the project, EGAT and its alliances will focus on conservation forest, mangrove forest, community forest, and economic forest. The project will last 10 years from 2022 to 2031. Moreover, EGAT will apply Carbon Capture Utilization and Storage or CCUS in 2045 to store carbon.
  3. S-Support Measures Mechanism is comprised of measures to avoid carbon dioxide emissions tangibly. EGAT has promoted energy efficiency to reduce power demand and CO2 emissions from electricity generation through various projects, including label no.5, energy advisory, electric vehicle support, and green classroom.
